TIMELY NOTICE
January 25, 2008

A person identified as Steven Ricci has moved to Brighton Ave., Portland, after being released on probation for multiple indecent conduct convictions. Go tohttp://www.usm. maine.edu/ mcr/news/ 0708releases/ 1.25.jpg to see his photograph. He is described as 5'11" and 190 lbs. He typically drives a 1995 red Chevy pickup truck with registration 748-399, and a black steel rack on the back. He is on probation as part of a plea agreement for an attempted sex abuse of a minor charge. He has a long history of mental illness and has been convicted of various sex offenses related to his inability to control his sexual impulses. Mr. Ricci wears a GPS device and has a curfew, along with the standard no criminal activity order. He has stated that he wants to find a woman to rape and sexually mutilate, and has described in great detail his plan to do this. He appears intent on following out these desires. USM Police offer the following safety tips:

*Always try to walk with someone when possible.
*If being followed, go directly to a populated place.
*Report any suspicious persons or vehicles immediately to police.
*Check your vehicle before getting in.
*Lock your vehicle immediately after entering.
*Use USM's police escort service when you feel unsafe.
*As always, do not prop dorm doors open and lock your room doors.

This notice is provided as part of USM's safety awareness and education efforts, and complies with federal legislation known as the Jeanne Cleary Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act of 1998.

30-year fixed rate at 5.96%; 10-year Treasury yield at 4.22%

Long-term mortgage interest rates dipped Monday, and the benchmark 10-year Treasury bond yield held at 4.22 percent.
The 30-year fixed-rate average sank to 5.96 percent, and the 15-year fixed rate slipped to 5.54 percent. The 1-year adjustable was down at 5.53 percent.
The 30-year Treasury bond yield stayed at 4.6 percent.
Rates and bonds are current as of 7:15 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
Mortgage rate figures are according to Bankrate.com, which publishes nightly averages based on its survey of 4,000 banks in 50 states. Points on these mortgages range from zero to 3.5.
In other economic news, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 55.19 points, or 0.42 percent, finishing at 12,987.55. The Nasdaq fell 43.81 points, or 1.67 percent, closing at 2,584.13.

09/26/07 - MREIS - SALES UP 6.74% IN AUGUST:
In a press release to the media today, MREIS reports that for the second month in a row, sales of single-family existing homes in Maine have increased. According to MREIS, 1,425 homes sold across the state during August 2007 - a 6.74% jump from last August’s total of 1,335. The median sales price for those homes remained unchanged at $195,000. The median sales price indicates that half of the homes were sold for more and half sold for less. Nationally, sales of single-family, existing homes dropped 13% since last August. According to NAR, buyers paid a median existing home price of $223,900, a figure that is essentially the same as last year. NAR also reported sales in the regional Northeast were down 5.7% from one year ago. The median sales price in the area rose 3.6% to $282,300.
